Walks - to the Abattoir

Cureghem (Anderlecht)

Between the railway and the Canal lies a district with a glorious industrial past. After the factories left in the 1970s, a period of neglect and poverty followed. The challenges remain very great in this ‘newcomers’ district’.

This Bruksel tour reveals the places where the future of Cureghem is taking shape, thanks to neighbourhood activity programmes, recycling and circular economy projects, new green corridors, investments in education and housing, a rich heritage and the dynamism of a young population. An exploration of a district where friction creates sparks. We end at the site of the Slaughterhouses, ‘den Abattoir’, where an ambitious sustainable urban project is under development.

We took a closer look at Cureghem in our Image Bank project (2021).
