Walks - city on the move

Lower city

The district between the central boulevards and the Canal is growing rapidly. The social housing blocks on Rue du Rempart des Moines (from the 1960s), which are an easily recognised landmark, are scheduled to make way for a mixed housing project. Nineteenth-century factories and warehouses are being converted into residential lofts, business centres, culture houses or private museums. A hospital has been turned into a college campus. This makeover is attracting new residents and visitors, and cool shops and art galleries, bars and restaurants are venturing into the area. The trendification process is gradually crossing the Canal, too. How well or badly is that going down with the current residents of the ‘Coin du Diable’ (‘Devil’s Corner’) and Old Molenbeek?

Our Bruksel walk takes you past the Beursschouwburg, the Halles Saint-Géry, Rue des Chartreux and Place du Jardin aux Fleurs, Rue du Rempart des Moines, La Poudrière and the Kaaistudio’s, as well as having a peek at the other side of the Canal via the new pedestrian bridges.
